Project Description

Snowmaking Pond at Prospect Mountain Ski Area

WOODFORD, VT

Overview

For more than half a century, Prospect Mountain has been a southwest Vermont ski destination. The Nordic skiing site came under new ownership in 2018. The new owner, the nonprofit Prospect Mountain Association, wished to rehabilitate a disused snowmaking pond in order to improve and expand trails and maintain the length and quality of the ski season.

Challenge

The Prospect Mountain Association wished to restore an existing snowmaking pond on the property for future use. The restoration required design, permitting, and construction.

Solution

Following a site survey, MSK completed site development plans in summer 2019, which included a new rockfill weir, bank stabilization, pond dredging necessary to restore water storage volume, and the installation of a dry hydrant. We also provided extensive regulatory support, including assistance with an Act 250 land-use permit application. The restored snowmaking pond stands as an important investment in the future of Prospect Mountain.
